City Resource Guides
On This Page
South Dakota residents can start with Medicaid for health coverage, Dakota at Home for resource searches, or Long Term Services and Supports for help with daily living. These entry points have different purposes. Identify the need and where the person lives before selecting a program, especially when arranging services outside a larger city.
Explore Medicaid Coverage
South Dakota Medicaid Guide explains the state’s health-coverage program and links to recipient information and application guidance. Use the applicant or recipient resources for personal coverage questions; provider pages serve a different audience. Ask which eligibility category and application apply to your household. A disability or a need for medical care alone does not establish coverage under every program.
Find a Resource Near You
Dakota at Home Resource Directory organizes resources for food, housing, transportation, care at home, and other needs. Enter a location to narrow the search. A directory result is a lead to contact, rather than an approved service or reservation. Confirm the provider’s service area, intake process, and current availability before relying on the listing.
Ask About Support at Home
South Dakota Long Term Services and Supports Guide describes home and community services for eligible older adults and adults with disabilities. The listing covers people age 60 or older and adults age 18 or older with a disability, subject to program requirements. Dakota at Home is the information and intake contact. Explain daily tasks that require assistance and ask about assessment, cost, and available providers.
Before You Contact a Program
- Record the person’s city, county, age, and immediate support needs.
- Separate health coverage from requests for meals, home help, or transportation.
- Ask whether a referral requires a new application or assessment.
- Keep the program name, contact date, and next step together.
Federal Benefits and Next Steps
Apply for SSDI[1] or SSI[2] through the Social Security Administration. Local resource programs have separate applications and do not decide federal disability benefits.
For the federal process, read our Disability Application Guide and Document Preparation Checklist.
