A disability or health change can involve more than one program. Start with the help you need, then check each program’s rules separately. An approval, disability rating or payment from one program does not automatically settle another program’s decision.

Choose a Benefit Program

What Each Program Does

SSDI
Social Security disability insurance uses insured work history and SSA’s disability rules. A condition does not have to be caused by work or military service.
SSI
Supplemental Security Income supports eligible people with limited income and resources who have a disability, are blind or are 65 or older. Other payments can affect eligibility or the amount payable.
Workers’ Compensation
Work-injury programs address covered occupational injuries and illnesses. The applicable state or federal system determines the claim process and benefits. Start with the state where you worked, and get agency guidance if more than one jurisdiction may be involved.
Medicare
Medicare is health coverage. People receiving Social Security disability benefits generally get Medicare after 24 months of disability benefits; ALS and end-stage renal disease have different rules. Check your actual coverage dates rather than counting from the date you applied.
VA Disability Compensation
VA evaluates service-connected disability under its own rules. VA compensation and SSDI can be received together when you qualify for each. SSI has separate financial rules.

Check the Connections Before Making a Decision

Keep separate copies of applications, decisions, deadlines and payment notices for each program. Ask the responsible agency or a qualified professional how a change affects your circumstances before assuming that benefits will remain the same.

Common Questions

Do I Have to Choose Just One Program?

Not necessarily. Some programs can be received together, but each has its own eligibility and coordination rules. Apply through the appropriate agency and report other benefits when required.

Are Federal Benefits Different in Every State?

SSDI, Medicare and VA compensation use federal program rules. State agencies, local assistance and some related benefits differ. Workers’ compensation is commonly administered through a state system, with separate federal programs for certain workers.

Does This Website File a Claim for Me?

No. Sending a request here does not file an agency claim or meet a deadline. The individual guides identify official starting points and explain the next steps.
