State & City Resources
Paterson, New Jersey: Disability Resources
On This Page
Paterson residents can use Passaic County programs for food and cash assistance, support at home, and non-emergency transportation. The county’s service descriptions cover different populations and purposes, so confirm both eligibility and the current application process for the help you need.
Passaic County Board of Social Services
The board’s Food and Security page describes SNAP, General Assistance, and assistance for eligible families with children. It also explains SNAP renewals and interim reporting. Ask staff which application and verification requirements apply to your household. Follow the instructions in your current case notice for renewals, and confirm application methods directly if you need an accessible alternative.
Senior Services and Disability Support
Passaic County’s Senior Services, Disability and Veterans Affairs department acts as the county Aging and Disability Resource Connection. It offers information, benefits screening, outreach, care management, and coordination with the Board of Social Services. Its programs include meal services and other supports for older adults. Explain the practical help needed at home and ask about screening, availability, or referral to another provider.
Passaic County Paratransit
County Paratransit provides non-emergency rides for older residents and residents with disabilities, including medical appointments, shopping, nutrition sites, and specified programs. Lift-equipped vehicles are available. The page gives separate contacts for Clifton and Passaic; Paterson uses the contact for other municipalities. Prepare trip details and mobility-device information when requesting a ride.
Before You Contact a Program
- For benefits, gather current income, address, and household information and keep notices with deadlines.
- Tell the aging and disability team whether you are seeking help for yourself or a family member.
- When requesting transportation, include the destination and return time as well as accessibility needs.
Keep Federal Benefits Separate
County assistance programs and paratransit registration are separate from federal disability benefits. SSA’s Disability page[1] explains SSDI; SSA’s SSI overview[2] explains SSI. Apply for federal benefits through SSA. Starting a local service application does not file an SSDI or SSI claim.
