New Jersey uses county agencies for many practical benefits and support services. Food assistance, long-term care navigation, and vocational rehabilitation have different entry points. Use the resources below to identify the right program, then check the county serving your home address. An information call or screening is a starting step, not a decision on every benefit you might need.

Apply for Food Assistance or Get Application Help

New Jersey’s SNAP application guide explains online, paper, and county social service agency options. It also links to MyNJHelps for SNAP and Work First New Jersey applications. Older adults and people with disabilities can name an authorized representative to submit an application. SNAP Navigators can explain requirements and assist with paperwork. The state says application help should not carry a fee; confirm an unfamiliar request for personal information with your county agency.

Find Your County Aging and Disability Contact

The county offices on aging directory lists an Area Agency on Aging for each county. These offices also lead the Aging and Disability Resource Connection, helping older adults, adults with disabilities, and caregivers locate long-term services and supports. Start here for information and referrals when you are unsure which community program fits. Ask about the particular service’s age, functional, financial, and availability requirements rather than assuming all listed programs share one eligibility rule.

Explore Vocational Rehabilitation

New Jersey’s Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (DVRS) assists eligible people whose disability substantially interferes with employment. You can refer yourself. A counselor and participant develop an employment plan based on individual goals and needs. Services can include counseling, job-search help, coaching, and accommodations. Some services involve a financial-needs assessment, so ask about costs before arranging or purchasing anything. The state page identifies a separate vocational rehabilitation agency for people who are blind or have significant visual impairment.

Before You Contact a Program

  • Identify your county and the specific kind of assistance you need.
  • For benefits, organize household income and relevant notices; request the agency’s document list.
  • For vocational services, describe your work goal and the tasks or access barriers involved.
  • Ask for an accessible application method or language assistance when making contact.

Keep Federal Benefits Separate

Food assistance and employment support are distinct from SSDI and SSI; applying to one does not start the others. SSA’s Disability page[1] explains SSDI; SSA’s SSI overview[2] explains SSI. Apply for federal benefits through SSA. Starting a local service application does not file an SSDI or SSI claim.
