Newark, New Jersey: Disability Resources
On This Page
Newark residents can turn to Essex County agencies for benefit applications, aging and disability referrals, and community transportation. These are county service routes, even when a particular office is outside Newark. Confirm the program and current contact instructions before making a trip.
Essex County Family Assistance and Benefits
The Division of Family Assistance and Benefits lists SNAP, Work First New Jersey cash assistance, and NJ FamilyCare information. Describe whether you need food support, health coverage, or emergency household assistance. Each program has separate eligibility rules. Use the county’s current application and contact links, and ask which office handles your request.
Essex County Aging and Disability Resource Connection
Essex County ADRC provides information and referrals for older adults, people with disabilities, and caregivers. Its information unit connects residents with community supports and caregiver programs, and can arrange outreach visits to help older adults assess needs. Ask about the next screening or referral step; services such as respite or care management have additional criteria.
Essex County Community Transportation
The county transportation program accepts inquiries from people over 60 and people with disabilities. Trips include medical, shopping, program, and other destinations within Essex County. New riders provide information before booking, and reservations must be made in advance. The county advises that riders may need flexible pickup days or times. Confirm both destination coverage and any assistance you need.
Before You Contact a Program
- Keep household benefit documents separate from transportation registration information.
- Tell ADRC about daily living needs and whether a caregiver is available.
- Check registration and booking rules before scheduling an appointment around a county ride.
Keep Federal Benefits Separate
Essex County assistance and transportation do not establish federal disability entitlement. SSA’s Disability page[1] explains SSDI; SSA’s SSI overview[2] explains SSI. Apply for federal benefits through SSA. Starting a local service application does not file an SSDI or SSI claim.
