City Resource Guides
On This Page
Montana resource searches often depend on service regions and the distance between home and the provider. Use the statewide programs below to find the right local entry point. Health coverage, long-term support planning, and rental assistance have separate requirements and should be tracked as separate requests.
Aging and Disability Resource Centers
Montana ADRC Guide provides information, referrals, and options counseling for adults age 60 and older and adults with disabilities over 18. The service is also a resource for people paying privately for support. Use the state’s county and reservation coverage list to identify the correct center, then explain the help needed at home or in the community.
Medicaid Applications and Current Notices
Montana Medicaid Application and Update Guidance lists online, telephone, mail, and local Office of Public Assistance application routes. Its current updates distinguish requirements for the Medicaid Expansion population and potential exclusions; they should not be treated as identical rules for every disability-related coverage category. Ask which category applies to you, and respond to the instructions in your own notice.
Rental Assistance by Region
Montana Rental Assistance Guide explains Housing Choice Vouchers and Moderate Rehabilitation assistance. The latter stays with a particular building, unlike a tenant-based voucher. Use the region map before selecting an application. The page currently lists open waiting lists, but a place on a list is not immediate assistance; funding, preferences, and turnover affect the wait.
Before You Contact a Program
- Record your county or reservation and the service area you need.
- Keep current Medicaid notices and contact information together.
- For housing, distinguish the regional voucher list from a specific property list.
- Ask about accessible application formats and what happens after referral.
Federal Benefits and Next Steps
Apply for SSDI[1] or SSI[2] through the Social Security Administration. Local resource programs have separate applications and do not decide federal disability benefits.
For the federal process, read our Disability Application Guide and Document Preparation Checklist.

Workers’ Compensation, Medicare and Veterans Benefits in Montana
Each program has its own application and decision process. These starting points help you find the agency or counseling program for Montana.
Workers’ Compensation
The claim-assistance forms page also contains settlement and advance forms. Those are not substitutes for the initial report. Do not select a settlement form merely because a carrier has offered a payment; understand what issues and future benefits the document addresses.
