State & City Resources
Chicago, Illinois: Disability Resources
On This Page
Chicago has a disability office, community service centers and regional accessible transit. Their roles differ: the disability office can point to city programs, a service center can assess support needs, and paratransit requires a separate certification process.
City Disability Programs and Access Requests
Chicago Mayor’s Office For People With Disabilities links to housing and home-modification resources, career and benefits counseling, independent-living supports and accessibility requests. Choose the program matching your need. To report a city accessibility barrier, use the designated request route; a general inquiry does not enroll someone in a housing or assistance program.
Community Service Center Assessment
Illinois DCEO: Chicago Community Service Centers lists Chicago’s DFSS community service centers and says they can assess applicants for available DFSS services. Services depend on local programs and needs. The page separately routes utility assistance and weatherization through CEDA. It specifically warns that CEDA’s listed administrative address is not an intake site; use its intake-site finder.
Pace ADA Paratransit
Pace ADA Paratransit Service requires certification by the Northern Illinois Transit Authority. Service is linked to fixed-route service areas and operating times, and rides require reservations. Check both pickup and destination using the current instructions. Certification, booking a ride and arranging any personal care attendant are separate steps.
Before You Contact a Program
- For a city program, identify whether you need access assistance, housing information or employment support.
- For basic needs, describe the current problem and any existing assistance.
- For utility help, confirm the actual intake location before visiting.
- For transit, verify certification, trip coverage and reservation requirements.
Federal Benefits and Next Steps
Apply for SSDI[1] or SSI[2] through the Social Security Administration. Local resource programs have separate applications and do not decide federal disability benefits.
For the federal process, read our Disability Application Guide and Document Preparation Checklist.
