Denver residents can use city-and-county human services for benefit applications, a regional resource center for care options and RTD for paratransit eligibility. These are separate processes. Keep the application or referral number for each one.

Denver Human Services Benefits

Denver Human Services: Be Supported provides routes to food, cash and medical assistance, along with other support categories. Its benefits page links to Colorado PEAK for online applications. Choose the assistance category matching your need and follow the application instructions. If you already have a case, keep any request for verification or renewal notice nearby when contacting the department.

Regional Aging and Disability Support

DRCOG Aging & Disability Resource Center serves Denver and the other counties listed on its page. The DRCOG center provides information and connections for adults 60 and older and adults with disabilities. Anyone may make a referral. Describe the person’s support needs and location so staff can discuss relevant options, rather than assuming a referral enrolls someone in a service.

RTD Access-a-Ride

RTD Access-a-Ride Eligibility evaluates disability-related ability to use fixed-route transit. Eligibility may be conditional or temporary, and service is limited by the stated route coverage and operating area. There is no service outside the RTD fixed-route service-area boundary. Check both ends of a planned trip and read the eligibility instructions before making travel arrangements.

Before You Contact a Program

  • Identify Denver as the city and county when that is the actual residence.
  • For benefits, organize the household and case information requested by the program.
  • For care referrals, describe daily tasks and current support.
  • For transit, explain functional barriers and confirm both addresses fall within coverage.

Federal Benefits and Next Steps

Apply for SSDI[1] or SSI[2] through the Social Security Administration. Local resource programs have separate applications and do not decide federal disability benefits.

For the federal process, read our Disability Application Guide and Document Preparation Checklist.
