Colorado residents can begin with state application systems, but county offices and regional organizations often handle the next step. Medical coverage, adult financial assistance and long-term support information are separate resources. Keep each program’s notices and requirements together so that an update to one case is not mistaken for an update to all of them.
Health First Colorado Applications
Health First Colorado: Apply Now provides online, telephone, mail and in-person application options. Colorado PEAK can be used to apply and check application status; in-person routes include the county of residence and application-assistance sites. Use the current instructions to identify documents or follow-up requests. An application route is not a statement that every applicant qualifies for coverage.
Adult Financial Assistance
Colorado Adult Financial Programs explains programs administered through county human-services offices. Aid to the Needy Disabled–State Only provides interim assistance while a person pursues SSI. The state describes Interim Assistance Reimbursement, which can repay covered assistance from SSI benefits for the same period. Other adult programs have different purposes and requirements. Ask the county which program applies and review any reimbursement agreement carefully.
Regional Options Counseling
Colorado Aging And Disability Resources connects people with information about long-term services and supports, including person-centered options counseling. The state page links to a regional Area Agency on Aging map and contacts. Use the contact for the relevant county and explain both the help needed and the person’s circumstances. Information and counseling do not by themselves authorize paid care or establish eligibility for another program.
Before You Contact a Program
- Start with the county of residence, not only the nearest large city.
- Identify whether the request is for medical coverage, financial help or support services.
- For a pending application, keep the case number and latest notice available.
- Ask which documents are still needed and where to send them.
- If interim assistance is involved, ask how reimbursement works and retain the agreement.
Federal Benefits and Next Steps
Apply for SSDI[1] or SSI[2] through the Social Security Administration. Local resource programs have separate applications and do not decide federal disability benefits.
For the federal process, read our Disability Application Guide and Document Preparation Checklist.

Workers’ Compensation, Medicare and Veterans Benefits in Colorado
Each program has its own application and decision process. These starting points help you find the agency or counseling program for Colorado.
Workers’ Compensation
If the insurer sends a Notice of Contest, OAC explains that it is disputing responsibility and will not voluntarily pay the contested benefits. Identify the reasons on the notice and the evidence that addresses them before requesting a hearing.
