Virginia offers several ways to seek support with food, health coverage, daily living, and employment. Different systems serve different needs, and local offices may serve a city rather than a surrounding county. Use the resources below to choose an entry point and confirm the jurisdiction for your residential address before submitting personal information.
Apply for Household Benefits Through CommonHelp
Virginia’s CommonHelp guide explains how to screen for possible assistance, apply, and manage benefit information online. Programs include food assistance, health coverage, energy assistance, and cash assistance for qualifying families with children. An account lets you upload documents, track updates, and report changes. Screening helps identify possible programs; the agency must still review your application and supporting information. Keep the submission confirmation and respond to notices about your case.
Find Community Supports With No Wrong Door
No Wrong Door Virginia helps older adults, people with disabilities, veterans, and caregivers connect with services. Its Virginia Easy Access tools let people search by need and locality, while Area Agencies on Aging lead local networks. This can be useful when several needs overlap, such as caregiving, transportation, and help at home. Ask the receiving provider about its service area, intake process, costs, and availability before assuming a referral secures a service.
Explore Vocational Rehabilitation Through DARS
DARS vocational rehabilitation provides individualized employment services for eligible students and adults with disabilities. Contact a local rehabilitative services office to start; staff can help with the application and explain the records needed for an eligibility decision. Services may include job coaching, assistive technology, or support toward employment-related qualifications. Work with the counselor on goals and the services needed to reach them. Application and approval are required.
Before You Contact a Program
- Identify your city or county and the most immediate practical need.
- Gather current household and benefit information for a financial-assistance request.
- For employment services, prepare examples of work barriers and the kind of job or training you want to pursue.
- Ask about accessible forms, communication support, and a way to follow up after referral.
Keep Federal Benefits Separate
Community supports and household assistance have different rules from federal disability cash benefits. SSA’s Disability page[1] explains SSDI; SSA’s SSI overview[2] explains SSI. Apply for federal benefits through SSA. Starting a local service application does not file an SSDI or SSI claim.
