Tampa residents can start with Hillsborough County for senior meals, transportation assistance, and access to county services. These resources serve different needs and have separate screening rules. County government accessibility help should not be confused with an accommodation request to another organization.

Hillsborough County Senior Meal Services

Senior Meal Services offers group lunches and home-delivered meals for eligible residents age 60 and older. Home delivery considers homebound status and nutritional or functional need; group meals require the ability to attend a center. The county reports a waiting list organized by need. Contact Aging Services about screening and explain difficulties shopping, cooking, or leaving home. Reaching age 60 alone does not settle eligibility or guarantee immediate meals.

Sunshine Line Transportation

Sunshine Line’s door-to-door service is for eligible older people, people with disabilities, and low-income residents who lack or cannot afford their own transportation. Screening considers income, age, disability, other available transportation, and the trip needed. Vehicles are wheelchair accessible. Trips are prioritized by purpose and provided as space permits. Contact Sunshine Line to find out which application to use, then confirm reservation requirements after enrollment.

Access to County Programs

Hillsborough County’s ADA Guide to Services explains how to request reasonable accommodations for county programs, services, and activities. It also points to accessible library services, assistive technology, adaptive recreation, and other resources. Start here when a county process or facility creates an access barrier. Identify the service and describe the change needed; a directory listing does not establish eligibility for a separate housing or recreation program.

Before You Contact a Program

  • Confirm that the service covers your Hillsborough County address and intended destination.
  • For meal screening, describe nutrition and mobility needs; ask about the waiting list.
  • For transportation, explain equipment and assistance needs and ask how return trips are arranged.

Keep Federal Benefits Separate

A meal application, county accommodation request, or Sunshine Line enrollment is separate from SSDI or SSI. SSA’s Disability page[1] explains SSDI; SSA’s SSI overview[2] explains SSI. Apply for federal benefits through SSA. The resources listed here do not decide your federal eligibility.
