Miami, Florida: Disability Resources
On This Page
Miami residents can use county programs for household assistance, disability-related transportation, and meals for older adults. These are Miami-Dade County resources, so check the service location and coverage for your home address. A nearby center may offer different services from another center.
Miami-Dade Community Resource Centers
Community Resource Centers offer social services for economically disadvantaged individuals and families. The county directory lists services and center locations, including centers in Miami. Review the particular service before choosing a location: offerings vary, and some routing is based on ZIP Code. The county also links online service options. Ask which center handles your request and what documents are needed, rather than traveling to an old address from a third-party listing.
Special Transportation Service
Miami-Dade Special Transportation Service (STS) provides shared, door-to-door paratransit throughout most of the county. The county’s eligibility description focuses on residents whose physical or mental disability prevents independent use of accessible public transit. Its application requires completion and signature by a Florida-licensed physician and supporting medical documentation. Use the current certification instructions; an SSA award alone does not complete this application. Visitors have a separate access process.
Meals for Older Residents
The county’s Meals for the Elderly program describes home-delivered meals for eligible older residents and meals at senior centers for people who are not homebound. Home delivery generally serves people at least 60 who meet disability or homebound criteria; the page also describes limited eligibility for spouses and dependent household members. Contact the listed program to determine eligibility and which option fits the household. Do not assume a center meal enrollment includes home delivery.
Before You Contact a Program
- Have your Miami-Dade address and ZIP Code ready when asking where to apply.
- For STS, discuss the transit barriers and required physician documentation before submitting the application.
- For meals, explain whether you can leave home, shop, prepare food, or attend a center.
Keep Federal Benefits Separate
Food services and accessible transportation use their own screening processes; they do not replace a federal disability claim. SSA’s Disability page[1] explains SSDI; SSA’s SSI overview[2] explains SSI. Apply for federal benefits through SSA. The resources listed here do not decide your federal eligibility.
