State & City Resources
Los Angeles, California: Disability Resources
On This Page
Start by separating City of Los Angeles services from Los Angeles County programs. A city resource may not handle a request for another municipality, even when the mailing address says Los Angeles. These three entry points address home support, access to city services and accessible rental housing.
County Help at Home
Los Angeles County DPSS: In-Home Supportive Services explains how eligible older, blind or disabled people can seek help to remain safely at home. The county offers application instructions by phone, mail and secure fax. A social worker assesses needs, and a health care professional completes the required certification. If you do not already receive Medi-Cal, the page directs you to apply. Ask which IHSS district handles your address.
Access to City Services
The City Department On Disability lists auxiliary aids, disability-access coordination and its Community Outreach Referrals and Education program. CORE makes referrals that may include housing, accessible transportation and employment services. Describe the city service you need to use and the barrier you face. A referral does not mean the department supplies every listed service itself.
Accessible Rental Housing
The Los Angeles Housing Department’s Accessible Housing Guide points to the Affordable and Accessible Housing Registry for covered developments. It supports property searches and applications to open conventional or accessible-unit waiting lists. A registry listing is not a vacancy or a placement promise. Check the property’s application status and explain the accessibility features you need.
Before You Contact a Program
- Write down your city, county and ZIP code.
- For IHSS, list the daily tasks you cannot safely complete without help.
- For housing, note household size and essential access features, such as a step-free route.
- Ask whether you are making an application, joining a waiting list or receiving a referral.
- Keep any confirmation and the program’s next-step instructions.
Keep Federal Benefits Separate
Applications for SSDI[1] and SSI[2] go through the Social Security Administration. The local services above do not decide those federal benefits. Keep each program’s application, notices and follow-up steps separate.
