Albuquerque, New Mexico: Disability Resources
On This Page
Albuquerque residents have separate local routes for senior support, housing, and accessible transportation. Housing application windows can change, and Sun Van requires its own eligibility process. Start with the appropriate agency and keep the next action for each request clear.
Senior Affairs Information and Assistance
Albuquerque Department of Senior Affairs provides older-adult services including help at home, meals, transportation assistance, and case management. Its information line can help identify the right service. Explain where the person lives, what help is missing, and whether support is needed at home; ask about the particular program’s eligibility and intake.
AHA Housing Applications
Albuquerque Housing Authority Application Guide lists program-specific opening and closing dates. Its current instructions require online pre-applications and state that applying is free. Check the exact program and current window before submitting; do not assume that one open list means all housing programs are accepting applications. Contact AHA about accessibility barriers or application questions.
Sun Van Paratransit
ABQ RIDE Sun Van uses an application and interview to certify eligible riders whose disabilities prevent use of city buses. The service covers the metropolitan area and portions of Bernalillo County, subject to its route-related boundary. Explain the assistance needed when arranging a ride, and confirm how to schedule the outbound and return trips.
Before You Contact a Program
- Identify the service and the address where help is needed.
- Check AHA’s live application notice and retain submission details.
- For Sun Van, describe actual travel barriers and required assistance.
Federal Benefits and Next Steps
Apply for SSDI[1] or SSI[2] through the Social Security Administration. Local resource programs have separate applications and do not decide federal disability benefits.
