Tacoma residents can contact Pierce County for aging and disability support, Tacoma Housing Authority for housing information, and Pierce Transit for SHUTTLE eligibility. County support coverage and the SHUTTLE travel zone are different boundaries. Check the specific service rather than assuming one approval covers all three.

Pierce County Support Navigation

Pierce County Aging and Disability Resources Guide serves older adults, adults with disabilities, and caregivers living in Pierce County. Its resource center helps people understand options and access long-term services and supports. Explain daily needs and caregiver concerns, and ask which assessment or provider referral is appropriate.

Tacoma Housing Programs

Tacoma Housing Authority provides information about subsidized apartments, vouchers, waiting lists, and applicant or resident tools. Check the program’s eligibility and service boundaries before applying. If already working with the authority, use the appropriate process to report changes; a general inquiry is different from updating an application.

SHUTTLE Paratransit

Pierce Transit SHUTTLE Guide requires eligibility based on barriers to using regular buses; having a disability or receiving SSA benefits alone does not qualify someone. Service is tied to the fixed-route area and operating times. Check both addresses and ask about application assistance or alternate formats if needed.

Before You Contact a Program

  • Give the county resource center the person’s residence and support needs.
  • Confirm which housing program and application record need attention.
  • For SHUTTLE, explain travel barriers and check the trip map and service times.

Federal Benefits and Next Steps

Apply for SSDI[1] or SSI[2] through the Social Security Administration. Local resource programs have separate applications and do not decide federal disability benefits.

For the federal process, read our Disability Application Guide and Document Preparation Checklist.
