State & City Resources
Gulfport, Mississippi: Disability Resources
On This Page
Gulfport’s resource entry points include a regional aging agency, South Mississippi Housing Authority, and Coast Transit Authority. Housing jurisdiction, aging-program rules, and transit route boundaries differ; confirm the specific service rather than relying only on a Gulfport mailing address.
SMPDD Senior Services
Southern Mississippi Planning and Development District provides aging information, assistance, and referrals. Its Harrison County case-management program connects eligible older adults with personal care, homemaker help, and nutrition services. Screening and age rules apply to particular programs. Describe daily support and caregiver needs, then ask about assessment and current service availability.
South Mississippi Housing Authority
The SMHA application page covers Harrison County among its service counties and provides an applicant portal. At review, it announced a North Park Estates Phase I waiting-list opening while stating that Section 8 applications were closed. Recheck each list before applying. The page offers application help for older people and applicants with special needs; eligibility is determined later.
Coast Transit ADA Paratransit
CTA’s ADA Paratransit page explains certification for riders whose disability prevents use of fixed-route service. Service is tied to the corridor within three-fourths of a mile of fixed routes, and trips require reservations. Ask CTA to check both addresses, explain boarding assistance, and confirm the application and booking process before arranging travel.
Before You Contact a Program
- Identify the housing program and property, not just the authority.
- Describe assistance needed at home when requesting aging services.
- Check the transit boundary and return trip before booking an appointment.
Keep Federal Benefits Separate
Aging services, housing, and transit each use separate application procedures. SSA’s Disability page[1] explains SSDI; SSA’s SSI overview[2] explains SSI. Apply for federal benefits through SSA. Starting a local service application does not file an SSDI or SSI claim.
