Portland, Maine: Disability Resources
On This Page
Portland residents can contact AgeMaine for community-resource guidance, Portland Housing Authority for its apartments, and RTP for disability-related transportation. AgeMaine is the current name of Southern Maine Agency on Aging. Confirm each service’s geographic coverage and application requirements.
AgeMaine Resource Specialists
AgeMaine’s community-resources service helps people explore home support, meals, housing, transportation, benefits, and caregiver options. Conversations are available by phone, Zoom, or appointment when needed. Resource lists cover Cumberland and York counties. AgeMaine explains that it does not determine other programs’ eligibility or maintain their waiting-list updates; contact the program itself about those questions.
Portland Housing Authority
The public-housing application page identifies apartments at Franklin Towers, Bayside East, Bayside Terrace, and Kennedy Park. Download the application packet or request one by mail. Printed applications must be delivered to the housing authority office under the posted instructions. Ask about the appropriate property, household requirements, application assistance, and current waiting-list process before submitting.
RTP ADA Paratransit
Regional Transportation Program’s rider guide describes Greater Portland ADA service for people whose disabilities prevent regular-bus use. Both trip endpoints must fall within the applicable three-quarter-mile corridor around fixed routes, during corresponding service periods. Complete the ADA application and eligibility process. Schedule the return journey as well as the outbound trip, and explain whether an attendant or companion will travel.
Before You Contact a Program
- Describe the immediate need when speaking with an AgeMaine resource specialist.
- Keep copies of the housing packet and confirm where it should be delivered.
- Check transit coverage for both addresses and request any needed application format.
Keep Federal Benefits Separate
Community referrals, housing applications, and transit certification do not file federal benefit claims. SSA’s Disability page[1] explains SSDI; SSA’s SSI overview[2] explains SSI. Apply for federal benefits through SSA. Starting a local service application does not file an SSDI or SSI claim.
