Arkansas residents can use state benefit programs and local service organizations for different needs. Food assistance, medical coverage and help at home have separate rules. Start with the program’s application instructions, then use the local guides below to identify contacts near your home.
Food Assistance Through SNAP
Arkansas DHS: SNAP explains how the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program helps eligible households cover part of their food budget. The page links to application information and benefit-management resources. SNAP is a food program, so it should not be treated as a substitute for medical coverage, rental assistance or a disability-benefits application. Read the application instructions and keep any request for household information with your records.
Medical Coverage and Related Programs
Arkansas DHS: Health Care Programs describes Medicaid categories and other health-care assistance, including Medicare Savings Programs. Income, resources, Arkansas residency and other requirements affect eligibility. Different categories address different circumstances; a single income figure or disability diagnosis does not establish eligibility for every program. Use the linked application information and ask which category fits your circumstances.
ARChoices Support at Home
Arkansas DHS: ARChoices In Homecare offers home and community-based services for qualifying adults with physical disabilities ages 21–64 and adults 65 or older. Financial criteria and the required level of care also apply. Available services include attendant care, meals, respite and certain home modifications. Ask about the assessment process and which supports are appropriate before assuming that a particular service will be authorized.
Before You Contact a Program
- List the help needed now: food, health coverage, personal care or another service.
- Gather current notices and the household information requested by the application.
- For home care, describe the everyday tasks that require another person’s help.
- Ask how to submit missing documents and how to check that they reached the right case.
- Record the program name, contact date and next step; a referral and an approval are different.
Federal Benefits and Next Steps
Apply for SSDI[1] or SSI[2] through the Social Security Administration. Local resource programs have separate applications and do not decide federal disability benefits.
For the federal process, read our Disability Application Guide and Document Preparation Checklist.
