Alaska residents may need different contacts for a benefits application, long-term support and rental housing. Start with your community and the type of help you need. Statewide information services can point you toward a regional office, but that referral does not establish eligibility for the programs it recommends.
Public Assistance and Application Routes
Alaska Division Of Public Assistance links to SNAP, Medicaid, heating assistance and other programs. Alaska Connect supports applications, renewals, document uploads and reporting changes. The department also describes office and telephone options. Its Medicaid instructions distinguish income-based coverage from applications based on age, disability or long-term care needs. Choose the route matching your situation rather than assuming every Medicaid application follows the same process.
Find Your Regional Support Contact
Alaska Aging And Disability Resource Centers connects older adults, people with disabilities and caregivers with long-term services. Its regional directory identifies contacts for Anchorage, northern Alaska, Southeast Alaska and other areas. Information is available regardless of age or income, while individual services have their own requirements. A specialist can discuss support needs and help identify relevant next steps.
Check Housing by Community
Alaska Housing Finance Corporation: Local Housing Offices lists Housing Choice Voucher locations and local application contacts, including Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau. Use the entry for the community where you seek housing. The directory identifies programs and offices; it does not establish that a waiting list is open or a unit is available. Ask the local office about current application status.
Before You Contact a Program
- Write down your community or borough and whether you need food, medical coverage, care support or housing.
- For an existing case, keep the latest notice and any request for documents nearby.
- Ask whether the first contact is an application, an eligibility screening or a referral.
- Explain any communication or travel barriers before arranging an appointment.
- Keep copies of what you submit and record the next action separately for each program.
Federal Benefits and Next Steps
Apply for SSDI[1] or SSI[2] through the Social Security Administration. Local resource programs have separate applications and do not decide federal disability benefits.
For the federal process, read our Disability Application Guide and Document Preparation Checklist.
