Alabama Disability Resources and Local Support
City Resource Guides
On This Page
Alabama residents may need help with food, transportation, daily care, or returning to work while managing a disability. The starting points below serve different purposes. Choose the program that addresses your immediate need, and confirm which county or regional office handles your address.
Apply for Food Assistance Through DHR
Alabama’s Department of Human Resources food assistance page explains SNAP and links to application information. Applications are also available through county DHR offices. Use the official instructions for your county and ask how to submit documents or follow an existing case. Food assistance has its own household eligibility rules; receiving a disability payment does not by itself resolve the application.
Find Support Through One Door Alabama
One Door Alabama’s Aging and Disability Resource Center network provides free information, counseling, and help finding programs. Regional staff can screen for benefits, assist with applications, and connect people with services such as transportation, food, in-home support, and caregiver resources. This is a useful starting point when several needs overlap. Describe your living arrangements and the daily tasks you need help with so staff can narrow the options.
Explore Employment Services
Vocational Rehabilitation Services works with Alabama residents whose physical or mental impairment creates a substantial barrier to employment and who can benefit from services toward work. A counselor develops an individualized approach that may include training, assistive technology, or employment support. ADRS also describes benefits counseling about how work can affect SSDI or SSI; that counseling is not limited to current or former ADRS clients. Ask for the service that fits your work goal.
Before You Contact a Program
- Have your county of residence, recent benefit notices, and the immediate problem ready to explain.
- Ask whether the next step is an application, an assessment, or a referral to another organization.
- Request an accessible format or communication assistance when arranging contact.
- Keep a record of documents submitted and ask how to follow up if you do not hear back.
Keep Federal Benefits Separate
Food assistance, employment services, and community support have separate eligibility and intake processes. SSA’s Disability page[1] explains SSDI; SSA’s SSI overview[2] explains SSI. Apply for federal benefits through SSA. Starting a local service application does not file an SSDI or SSI claim.

Workers’ Compensation, Medicare and Veterans Benefits in Alabama
Each program has its own application and decision process. These starting points help you find the agency or counseling program for Alabama.
Workers’ Compensation
The division’s benefits page directs an employee to apply through the employer. Employer and insurer reporting forms are part of that process. Ask for the claim number and a copy of the decision, especially if the employer says a report has already been sent.
Medicare Counseling and Cost Help
Free, objective Medicare counseling through the state SHIP network; ask about enrollment, coverage choices, and help with costs.
