Alabama Workers’ Compensation: Claims, Disputes, and Help
On This Page
Which System Handles This Claim?
Alabama’s division explains medical and wage-loss benefits, but the employer or its insurer ordinarily handles payment. Coverage has employer-size and occupation exceptions; a workplace injury does not by itself establish that every employer must carry this insurance.
How Do I Report the Injury?
Tell your employer about the injury and ask for the insurer or claims administrator. Explain the work activity involved and keep the report you make. Ask who can authorize treatment rather than assuming a personal health-insurance appointment follows the workers’ compensation process.
What Do I File?
The division’s benefits page directs an employee to apply through the employer. Employer and insurer reporting forms are part of that process. Ask for the claim number and a copy of the decision, especially if the employer says a report has already been sent.
What if Benefits Are Disputed?
For a denied claim, the division identifies its examiners as an information resource and describes pursuing a contested claim through circuit court. An examiner’s explanation is different from a court filing or representation by a lawyer.
Where Can I Get Help, and What Should I Bring?
When asking for help, separate an unpaid medical bill from a dispute about whether the accident was work-related. Bring the insurer’s explanation, treatment authorization, wage records, and dates missed from work. Ask which step preserves the particular issue and which deadline applies.
