Southaven, Mississippi: Disability Resources
On This Page
Southaven residents can use DeSoto County’s public resource directory to reach regional aging support, utility assistance, and library access. These entries have different audiences: senior programs use age criteria, while some utility and library services also serve younger people with disabilities.
North Delta Aging Services
DeSoto County’s aging-agency page identifies North Delta Planning and Development District as the agency serving county seniors. It lists referrals, caregiver support, homemaker assistance, and insurance counseling. Ask which service fits your age and support needs, whether an assessment is required, and how to request it. The directory is not an automatic enrollment in every listed program.
Local Utility-Assistance Contacts
The county’s utility and home-assistance page identifies Mid-State Opportunity and local application contacts for Power to Care. That bill-assistance entry specifically concerns seniors and disabled Entergy customers in crisis. Start with your actual utility provider and describe the notice or bill you received. Ask about current funds, eligibility, and required documents before assuming a listed program covers your account.
First Regional Library Access
The county’s active-resources directory lists the Southaven library and First Regional Library’s Books by Mail service. Delivery is described for patrons unable to reach a library because of illness, disability, or lack of transportation; caregivers are also eligible. Use the listed library contact to ask how to enroll and what materials or accessible formats meet your needs.
Before You Contact a Program
- Have your DeSoto County address and relevant program notices ready.
- Identify your utility company before seeking bill assistance.
- Explain whether library access is limited by travel, reading format, or both.
Keep Federal Benefits Separate
These community services are separate from SSDI and SSI. SSA’s Disability page[1] explains SSDI; SSA’s SSI overview[2] explains SSI. Apply for federal benefits through SSA. Starting a local service application does not file an SSDI or SSI claim.
