Washington residents may need different application routes for food assistance, Apple Health coverage, and long-term care. Washington Connection and Washington Healthplanfinder are not interchangeable for every household. Start with the official guidance that fits the program, then ask for help if age, Medicare coverage, disability, or care needs make the route unclear.
Apply for DSHS Assistance
Washington DSHS Application Guide explains online, telephone, and in-person options for food, cash, and certain medical assistance. Washington Connection also supports changes and eligibility reviews. Some programs require interviews and verification. DSHS offers application help and language assistance; ask for these when needed, and keep requests for information with the relevant application record.
Choose an Apple Health Application Route
Washington Apple Health Application Guide distinguishes Healthplanfinder coverage from applications handled by DSHS, including certain aged, blind, disabled, Medicare-related, and long-term-care categories. The correct route depends on the coverage requested and household circumstances. Use the guide or ask an application worker which process applies; do not assume every person with a disability must use the same portal.
Find Long-Term Care and Caregiver Navigation
Washington Long-Term Care Navigation Guide explains the roles of local aging agencies, Community Living Connections, and Home and Community Services. Community Living Connections offers free information and help finding resources for older adults, people with disabilities, and caregivers. Actual services can require separate eligibility reviews. For Medicaid-funded long-term care, ask which financial and care assessments are needed.
Before You Contact a Program
- Identify the benefit or service requested and where the person lives.
- Have existing health coverage and Medicare information available.
- Ask for an interpreter, accessible communication, or application help if needed.
- Keep each program’s forms, verification requests, and decision notices together.
Federal Benefits and Next Steps
Apply for SSDI[1] or SSI[2] through the Social Security Administration. Local resource programs have separate applications and do not decide federal disability benefits.
For the federal process, read our Disability Application Guide and Document Preparation Checklist.
