On This Page
Rhode Island offers separate starting points for household assistance, help enrolling in benefits, and employment support for people with disabilities. These services have different eligibility rules. Use this directory to choose the right first contact, then follow the local guides for help closer to home.
DHS: Household Benefits and Health Coverage
The Department of Human Services application page explains HealthyRhode online applications and paper routes by mail or agency drop box. You can request more than one program through the assistance application. DHS may need identity, income, resource, and expense information, depending on the benefit requested. Health-coverage-only forms and instructions for long-term services are also linked. Select the route that fits the assistance you need and keep a copy of what you submit.
Benefits Enrollment Center
The Office of Healthy Aging’s Benefits Enrollment Center page identifies statewide enrollment assistance for Rhode Island Medicare beneficiaries. Programs include Medicaid, Medicare Savings Programs, Part D Extra Help, SNAP, energy assistance, and state pharmaceutical assistance. This can be useful when several applications or renewal notices overlap. Ask for an appointment and explain which costs or notices are causing difficulty. Enrollment help does not mean everyone qualifies for every program.
Vocational Rehabilitation
The Office of Rehabilitation Services VR program helps people with disabilities prepare for, obtain, and maintain employment. Its focus is work: eligibility considers disability-related barriers and the need for rehabilitation services. The page includes application information and a link explaining its order-of-selection waiting list. Ask how that policy affects access to services before assuming support can begin immediately. This employment program is different from applying for monthly federal disability benefits.
Before You Contact a Program
- List the help needed now: food, health costs, energy bills, or employment support.
- Keep benefit letters, household information, and the agency’s requested documents available.
- Ask about the correct application, any referral requirement, communication needs, and how to track the next step.
Keep Federal Benefits Separate
An enrollment counselor or employment program may assist with a particular need while your federal claim follows its own process. SSA’s Disability page[1] explains SSDI; SSA’s SSI overview[2] explains SSI. Apply for federal benefits through SSA. Starting a local service application does not file an SSDI or SSI claim.
