San Antonio, Texas: Disability Resources
On This Page
San Antonio residents have separate starting points for aging and disability referrals, household financial help and accessible transportation. Confirm the county or transit coverage for your address. Being eligible for one program does not automatically establish eligibility for another.
Bexar Aging and Disability Support
AACOG’s Aging Services distinguishes the Bexar Area Agency on Aging, serving Bexar County, from the Alamo agency serving surrounding counties. Aging services support adults 60 and older and caregivers. AACOG also identifies its Alamo Service Connection ADRC as a resource for adults with disabilities of any age. Ask which program fits your situation rather than assuming every service has the same age requirement.
Household Financial Assistance
San Antonio’s Department Of Human Services Financial Assistance describes help for families in San Antonio and Bexar County. The entry page links to utility assistance, financial counseling and other programs. Choose the program matching the bill or problem you face, and check its current requirements. A general financial-assistance inquiry is not a completed utility-assistance application.
VIAtrans Accessible Transportation
VIAtrans Paratransit serves people whose functional limitations prevent use of regular VIA bus service for some or all trips. Applicants complete an application with a medical-professional section and may need a functional assessment. Service operates in the areas and times of VIA bus service. Confirm both trip addresses with VIA rather than relying only on a mailing address or map estimate.
What to Prepare
- For AACOG, note the person’s county, age and care or caregiver needs.
- For financial help, gather the relevant bill and ask for that program’s document list.
- For VIAtrans, describe barriers to using the bus and identify the professional who can complete the medical section.
- Ask for any communication or application assistance you need.
- Keep each program’s decision and follow-up instructions in a separate record.
Keep Federal Benefits Separate
Applications for SSDI[1] and SSI[2] go through the Social Security Administration. The local services above do not decide those federal benefits. Keep each program’s application, notices and follow-up steps separate.
