Knoxville, Tennessee: Disability Resources
On This Page
Knoxville residents can seek aging-related guidance through the CAC Office on Aging, apply to KCDC housing properties, and explore KAT’s LIFT transit service. Knox County referral coverage is broader than a particular housing property or transit trip; confirm the relevant boundary for each need.
CAC Information and Benefits
The CAC Office on Aging’s Information and Benefits Department offers free guidance and referrals for aging-related needs in Knox County. Topics include health coverage, housing and home support, transportation, legal resources, and benefits. Staff also help older adults navigate SNAP applications. Telephone contact and in-person appointments are available; explain the problem you want to solve and ask which program can address it.
KCDC Housing Applications
KCDC’s application instructions explain online applications for its owned and operated properties. Waiting lists are property-specific, so select each property of interest. An email address is needed, and admissions staff can assist with the application. KCDC lists household identification, income verification, and current contact information to prepare, and provides reasonable accommodations for applicants with disabilities. Joining a list does not mean immediate placement.
KAT’s LIFT Paratransit
KAT’s schedules and services page includes The LIFT, a reservation-based, door-to-door service for people unable to use regular fixed-route buses. Riders must be certified before using it. Read the linked handbook and complete the application, including the health care provider’s section. Confirm the current submission instructions directly with KAT, then check trip coverage and advance-booking requirements.
Before You Contact a Program
- Give CAC your county and the specific benefit or daily-living concern.
- Keep household income records and a working email for housing applications.
- Ask KAT about both trip endpoints and the assistance you will need.
Keep Federal Benefits Separate
Local referrals, housing applications, and transit certification do not submit federal benefit applications. SSA’s Disability page[1] explains SSDI; SSA’s SSI overview[2] explains SSI. Apply for federal benefits through SSA. Starting a local service application does not file an SSDI or SSI claim.
