State & City Resources
Charlotte, North Carolina: Disability Resources
On This Page
Charlotte residents can use Mecklenburg County’s benefits and transportation services alongside INLIVIAN’s housing application system. Each route addresses a different need. Confirm county coverage and current program requirements before arranging a visit or relying on transportation.
Mecklenburg County Benefit Applications
The county’s Apply for Benefits page offers online routes for food, medical, and energy assistance, plus paper and phone options. It identifies community resource centers with secure document drop boxes. Existing applicants can use the listed case-status routes. Ask which documents are still needed instead of assuming that starting an online account completes your application.
Mecklenburg Transportation System
MTS coordinates rides for eligible county residents who are not living in assisted living or nursing homes. Medicaid transportation, older-adult and disability transportation, and general-purpose trips have different requirements. Except for Medicaid transportation, programs have limited funding and trip frequency may change. The page calls for booking at least three business days ahead; confirm approval, destination coverage, and return arrangements.
INLIVIAN Applicant Portal
INLIVIAN’s application instructions explain selecting properties with open lists and using the applicant portal. Screening includes income and asset verification and other checks. The current notice says the Housing Choice Voucher list is closed, which is separate from property-specific openings. Existing applicants must keep contact and household information current so they can receive notices.
Before You Contact a Program
- Have your county benefit case reference and latest notice available.
- For MTS, identify the trip purpose, full addresses, and any assistance needed.
- For housing, check the specific property list and retain your portal registration details.
Keep Federal Benefits Separate
County assistance and housing applications do not submit a federal disability claim. SSA’s Disability page[1] explains SSDI; SSA’s SSI overview[2] explains SSI. Apply for federal benefits through SSA. Starting a local service application does not file an SSDI or SSI claim.
