State & City Resources
Manchester, New Hampshire: Disability Resources
On This Page
Manchester residents can contact the City for basic-expense assistance, the local housing authority for rental programs, and the Cashin Center for older-adult support. These entry points serve different purposes.
Manchester Welfare Department
The City’s Welfare Department provides financial assistance to individuals and families unable to meet basic expenses such as food, housing, medication, and utilities. Ask how to apply and what household information is needed. The City directs people who live elsewhere to their own town or city for general assistance; state DHHS benefits use a separate application.
Manchester Housing and Redevelopment Authority
MHRA’s application page offers online and printable applications. Online applicants must apply separately for each waiting list they want to join. Keep the confirmation and contact information current, and avoid duplicating an existing application to the same list. MHRA specifically states that it does not provide emergency rental assistance, so a waiting-list application should not be treated as an immediate response to eviction.
Cashin Senior Activity Center
The Cashin Center welcomes adults age 55 and older for social activities, education, and connections to local services. Offerings include Medicare education and financial-resource presentations. Manchester residents have free membership; nonresidents can ask about the current membership fee. Review the newsletter for the activity you want and ask about access or registration needs.
Before You Contact a Program
- For welfare, explain the unpaid expense and any notice or deadline.
- For housing, identify each application already filed and retain the confirmation.
- For the Cashin Center, ask about membership and the specific program of interest.
Keep Federal Benefits Separate
Local financial help and housing enrollment do not replace a federal disability claim. SSA’s Disability page[1] explains SSDI; SSA’s SSI overview[2] explains SSI. Apply for federal benefits through SSA. Starting a local service application does not file an SSDI or SSI claim.
