Saint Louis residents should distinguish city programs from services for the surrounding county. The city aging agency, St. Louis Housing Authority, and regional transit system each have separate eligibility and application rules. Start by confirming which jurisdiction serves your address.

City Aging-Agency Transportation

St. Louis Area Agency on Aging Transportation offers listed non-emergency trips for St. Louis City residents age 60 or older and city residents with disabilities ages 18–59. Service is subject to availability and covers specified purposes such as medical visits, shopping, and essential business. Ask whether the particular trip qualifies before arranging an appointment around it.

SLHA Housing Applications

St. Louis Housing Authority Applications currently lists its general Public Housing and Housing Choice Voucher waiting lists as closed, while identifying an elderly-only waiting-list route. Check the specific building’s age criteria and current status with SLHA. Its page explains application accommodations and the need to update contact information. Submitting an application is not an offer of housing.

Metro Call-A-Ride

Metro Call-A-Ride is shared paratransit for eligible people whose disabilities prevent use of MetroBus or MetroLink. It requires advance planning and is not a direct taxi service. Prepare exact addresses, needed assistance, and any companion information. Ask which service area and reservation rules apply to the trip and how to arrange the return journey.

Before You Contact a Program

  • Confirm whether your address is in the city or county.
  • Check the particular housing list and building rules.
  • Allow time for shared transportation and confirm the return trip.

Federal Benefits and Next Steps

Apply for SSDI[1] or SSI[2] through the Social Security Administration. Local resource programs have separate applications and do not decide federal disability benefits.

For the federal process, read our Disability Application Guide and Document Preparation Checklist.
