Wichita residents can contact Sedgwick County for aging and disability resources, the city housing authority for voucher information and Wichita Transit for paratransit. County-wide service descriptions and city transit coverage are different.

Sedgwick County Support Options

Sedgwick County Aging And Disabilities Services lists services for residents with physical disabilities and adults 60 or older. Examples include support related to vision, meals, home safety and caregiver needs, with different requirements for different programs. Start with the Information and Assistance contact and describe the need. Do not assume that every listed service serves every age group.

Housing Choice Voucher Application Route

Wichita Housing Choice Voucher Applications links to the city’s online preliminary application for the voucher waiting list. Preliminary applications were being accepted at the source check. Follow the current instructions and distinguish submitting a preliminary application from receiving assistance. Ask the housing authority about current status, documentation and any accessibility help needed.

Wichita Transit Paratransit

Wichita Transit Paratransit serves people who are functionally unable to use regular buses because of a disability. After an application, the process may include an in-person interview or functional assessment. Eligibility can depend on circumstances or be temporary. Explain the specific travel barriers, and check the current service area and reservation instructions for your trip.

Before You Contact a Program

  • For county services, describe age, residence and the particular support need.
  • For housing, keep the preliminary-application record and follow-up instructions.
  • For transit, describe barriers to reaching or using the regular bus.
  • Ask each program about current availability and the next required step.

Federal Benefits and Next Steps

Apply for SSDI[1] or SSI[2] through the Social Security Administration. Local resource programs have separate applications and do not decide federal disability benefits.

For the federal process, read our Disability Application Guide and Document Preparation Checklist.
