State & City Resources
Hartford, Connecticut: Disability Resources
On This Page
Hartford’s city services, housing authority, and regional paratransit program have different eligibility rules. In particular, senior-center participation and the City’s older-adult ride service do not use the same age threshold.
Hartford Senior and Community Services
The City’s Senior Services page describes four centers serving adults age 55 and older, caregiver support, and information about benefits and help at home. Its separate Dial-A-Ride program serves Hartford residents age 60 and older. Ask which service fits the need and how to enroll; a senior-center contact does not automatically enroll someone in transportation or home help.
Housing Authority of the City of Hartford
The authority’s public housing page explains low-income rental housing, application information, and disability-accommodation requests. Eligibility considers household circumstances, income, and other requirements. Waiting lists can close and waits can be long. Check the current application route and describe any accessible-unit or process accommodation needed before assuming a placement is available.
Greater Hartford ADA Paratransit
The regional transit district’s ADA service serves people unable to use CTTransit fixed-route service because of disability in its Hartford, Bristol, and New Britain service areas. The page links eligibility, service-area, reservation, and visitor information. Ask staff to verify the actual trip and application process. Materials are available in accessible formats and other languages on request.
Before You Contact a Program
- Confirm Hartford residency where the City program requires it.
- Keep housing notices and requested household records together.
- For transit, explain the functional barriers to fixed-route travel and check both addresses.
Keep Federal Benefits Separate
City and regional services do not replace the federal disability application. SSA’s Disability page[1] explains SSDI; SSA’s SSI overview[2] explains SSI. Apply for federal benefits through SSA. The resources listed here do not decide your federal eligibility.
