Bridgeport, Connecticut: Disability Resources
On This Page
Bridgeport residents can use regional agencies for benefit navigation and accessible transportation, and Park City Communities for local housing information. Check service boundaries and intake requirements before making arrangements.
Southwestern Connecticut Agency on Aging
SWCAA helps older adults and people with disabilities in southwestern Connecticut navigate Medicare, Medicaid, other benefits, and community services. Its network includes home-care support, meals, and other aging resources. Explain the daily assistance needed and ask which local program can assess the situation. A referral does not mean every service is available or funded.
GBT Access Transportation
GBT Access serves riders whose disabilities prevent use of regular buses. Its coverage generally includes Bridgeport and portions of surrounding towns, tied to fixed-route service. Applicants complete an application and attend an in-person assessment. Confirm both trip endpoints and travel times; eligibility alone does not make every destination available. Accessible-format information is offered.
Park City Communities Housing
Park City Communities’ senior and disability housing page identifies affordable communities for people over 62 or people with disabilities. It describes elevator or ground-floor access and accessible units. Contact the authority about current applications, the relevant waiting list, and the features you need in a unit. A description of accessible housing is not a promise that a suitable unit is vacant.
Before You Contact a Program
- For SWCAA, describe current supports and the help missing at home.
- For GBT, explain barriers to regular buses and identify the exact trip.
- For housing, ask about income screening, waiting-list status, and accommodation requests.
Keep Federal Benefits Separate
These local programs operate separately from an SSA claim. SSA’s Disability page[1] explains SSDI; SSA’s SSI overview[2] explains SSI. Apply for federal benefits through SSA. The resources listed here do not decide your federal eligibility.
