Columbus residents should check county boundaries when seeking benefits or home support. COAAA serves an eight-county region, Franklin County processes applications for its residents, and COTA Mainstream uses transit-route boundaries rather than an entire county.

COAAA Home-Support Guidance

COAAA’s Help Staying at Home page explains care programs and access to a consultation or assessment. It covers needs such as personal care, meals, and homemaker help. The agency serves Franklin and seven surrounding counties. Long-term care consultation has no age or income requirement, while the programs that fund ongoing services have their own rules.

Franklin County Public Benefits

The county’s application guide explains online and phone applications for food, cash, or medical assistance. Follow the notice for any interview and send the verification requested for your household. The page links a document-upload portal and identifies submission locations. If your Columbus address lies outside Franklin County, use your own county agency for case-specific assistance.

COTA Mainstream

Mainstream’s application instructions require applicant and licensed-professional portions, followed by an interview and functional assessment. Eligibility is based on functional limitations, with a minimum applicant age of eight. The ADA service covers the corridor within three-fourths of a mile of fixed routes. Mainstream On-Demand is a separate non-ADA option; check which service and booking process applies to your trip.

Before You Contact a Program

  • Identify your county before contacting an assistance office.
  • Explain the daily tasks or travel barriers for which you need help.
  • Arrange the professional application portion and assessment before relying on Mainstream.

Keep Federal Benefits Separate

Home-care and transit enrollment are separate from applying for federal disability benefits. SSA’s Disability page[1] explains SSDI; SSA’s SSI overview[2] explains SSI. Apply for federal benefits through SSA. Starting a local service application does not file an SSDI or SSI claim.
