Which System Handles This Claim?

Washington has state-fund claims managed by Labor & Industries and claims administered by self-insured employers. Benefit rights remain protected, but the filing destination and claim manager differ. Identify which arrangement applies before submitting paperwork.

Official Washington Guidance; Additional Washington Resources.

How Do I Report the Injury?

Tell the employer and obtain medical care. Gather the accident location, witnesses, employer details, wages, and provider information. Explain to the provider that the condition is work-related so the appropriate report is completed.

Official Washington Guidance.

What Do I File?

For a state-fund claim, L&I describes filing through FileFast, by telephone, or through the medical provider’s Report of Accident. If the employer is self-insured, file through that employer or its representative using the applicable self-insured process.

Official Washington Guidance.

What if Benefits Are Disputed?

Keep and read every order or notice. L&I’s worker guidance explains how to contact its Self-Insurance Program about problems with a self-insured claim. A protest or appeal of a decision is different from merely asking a claim manager for a status update.

Where Can I Get Help, and What Should I Bring?

Confirm who has the complete file, especially on a self-insured claim. Keep submission records, medical restrictions, and communications about proposed work. If the employer discourages filing, L&I provides a claim-suppression complaint resource; reporting suppression and filing the benefits claim are separate actions.
