Kansas Workers’ Compensation: Claims, Disputes, and Help

Which System Handles This Claim?
Kansas explains that, except for its state-employee qualification, the employer’s carrier ordinarily files with the state and pays the claim. The division is an assistance and administration resource, not the usual payer of an injured worker’s benefits.
How Do I Report the Injury?
Report the injury to the employer and ask for the insurance adjuster’s contact details. Use the division’s Information for Injured Employees and Rights and Responsibilities documents to check the applicable notice requirements and next steps.
What Do I File?
The employer or insurer generally selects authorized treating providers. Before arranging a different provider, discuss authorization with the adjuster. The state describes a limited unauthorized-treatment allowance, but that is not a general promise that any independently arranged treatment will be covered.
What if Benefits Are Disputed?
Workers Compensation Consultants, also called ombudsmen, provide impartial help with unpaid benefits, medical-treatment issues, informal resolution, mediation, and filing for a hearing or appeal. They are not attorneys representing the injured worker.
Where Can I Get Help, and What Should I Bring?
When requesting help, identify the employer, insurer, injury date, and the exact payment or treatment in dispute. Keep the current physician’s restrictions and the insurer’s written explanation. Use the state’s dated benefit tables only after determining which injury date and benefit category govern; a current maximum does not tell you what an individual claim will pay.
