Springfield, Massachusetts: Disability Resources
On This Page
Springfield residents may need application help, an affordable home, or transportation that accommodates a disability. The local contacts below offer practical starting points without guaranteeing eligibility or immediate service.
Elder Affairs Outreach
Springfield’s Outreach Division helps people age 60 and older with housing applications, SNAP applications, fuel assistance, and city discount programs. It also provides community referrals and advocacy. Explain which application or notice needs attention. Help completing paperwork does not mean the receiving program will approve the request.
Springfield Housing Authority
The housing authority’s public housing guide describes city developments for families and for older or disabled residents. Income and other eligibility requirements apply, and waiting lists may open or close. Follow the applicants link for the current process. Ask about the list that matches your household and any accessible features needed; a development listing is not a vacancy notice.
PVTA ADA Paratransit
PVTA’s paratransit page explains shared, door-to-door transportation for people whose disabilities prevent use of city buses. Service generally follows bus operating days and the corridor within three-quarters of a mile of a city route. Apply through PVTA and check the actual trip addresses. The page provides application and rider-guide links and information for eligible visitors.
Before You Contact a Program
- For outreach, bring the application or notice and identify the deadline.
- For housing, prepare household information and ask about accommodation procedures.
- For PVTA, explain travel barriers, mobility-equipment needs, and the desired pickup and return locations.
Keep Federal Benefits Separate
Local assistance and paratransit certification do not replace an SSA application. SSA’s Disability page[1] explains SSDI; SSA’s SSI overview[2] explains SSI. Apply for federal benefits through SSA. Starting a local service application does not file an SSDI or SSI claim.
