SSA Field Office Changes: Appointments and Your Options

An office-service change can affect how you get help even when it does not change the eligibility rules. Before traveling, confirm your local office’s location and service options. A national headline cannot tell you whether your particular office has moved or what documents your appointment requires.

What SSA Announced

SSA’s November 13, 2024 notice introduced appointment-focused service nationwide beginning January 6, 2025. It also said people unable or unwilling to make an appointment would not simply be turned away, and identified vulnerable populations and situations needing immediate or specialized attention as examples of walk-in service.

That distinction matters: an appointment is the practical starting point, but the announcement did not eliminate every walk-in option. Contact SSA about your circumstances rather than assuming you cannot be served.

• Online: Check the official service pages for the task you need. Availability depends on the benefit and transaction.
• Phone: Call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 to discuss service or an appointment.
• In person: Use SSA’s office locator, confirm the address and ask what to bring.

Protect Your Application or Appeal

Keep your notice, a list of questions and a record of contacts. If an access problem threatens a deadline, tell SSA promptly and ask how to submit the required request. Do not assume an office change automatically extends a deadline or guarantees that your claim will move at the same speed.
