Myasthenia gravis can cause weakness in voluntary muscles, including muscles used for movement, speech, swallowing or breathing. Weakness may worsen with activity and improve with rest. A disability application should explain that pattern using your own medical and functional history, rather than relying on a brief demonstration of strength.

SSA’s Myasthenia Gravis Listing

Adult listing 11.12 includes different alternatives involving specified motor limitations, certain bulbar or neuromuscular complications, or combined physical and mental limitations. It also contains a prescribed-treatment requirement. Read the complete rule with its neurological definitions; not every symptom satisfies one of these alternatives.

If no listing is met or equaled, SSA considers remaining work abilities. Explain the ability to repeat activities and the rest needed, as well as any other diagnosed impairments. A serious breathing problem requires urgent medical attention, not a benefits-paperwork response.

Record the Pattern of Weakness

Identify diagnostic evaluations, treating specialists and existing tests. Describe variation across tasks and time without conducting your own endurance test. Include improvement when it occurs and explain what brings it about.

  • Describe limb, eye, speech or swallowing difficulties that are part of your condition.
  • Record activities that become harder with repetition and the rest needed.
  • Include hospital treatment or a crisis when applicable.
  • List treatment changes and assistance used in daily life.

Treatment Is Individualized

MedlinePlus describes medicines and specialist treatments that may improve muscle weakness or manage the immune process. Some people receive other procedures depending on their situation. The care team should decide which approach is appropriate; this page does not provide a treatment schedule.

For the claim, document response, remaining limitations, side effects and treatment visits. Explain interruptions or access barriers. A medication or procedure should not be described as ineffective unless that reflects what happened, and you should not interrupt care to make weakness more apparent.

Explain the Difference Between One Task and Repeated Tasks

A hypothetical applicant might lift an item once but be unable to repeat the activity without substantial rest. Describe the item, repetitions, timing and assistance rather than saying only “I can lift it” or “I cannot lift anything.” The example illustrates documentation, not a medical test.

Likewise, describe communication or other difficulties in their actual setting. A short conversation and prolonged speaking may place different demands on someone. Keep the record consistent with clinical observations and explain any uncertainty.

Prepare Work and Provider Information

List your actual job duties, schedule and any adjustments attempted. Make sure SSA can identify the specialist and facilities holding relevant records. Keep a copy of submissions, note who helped prepare them and report relevant new care while the claim is pending.

Applications, Decisions and Approval Data

SSDI has work-insurance requirements; SSI has financial and other eligibility rules. For adults, SSA generally requires an impairment that prevents substantial gainful activity and has lasted, or is expected to last, at least 12 months or result in death. A diagnosis alone does not settle the claim. If SSA denies an application, read the notice and its appeal instructions promptly.

We do not assign a personal approval percentage to this condition. Historical SSA studies concern particular programs, diagnostic groups and decision stages; a condition’s share of awarded benefits is a different measure. Read what disability approval statistics can tell you.
