Crohn's disease can interrupt work through urgent bathroom trips, abdominal symptoms, fatigue and complications that need intensive care. The difficulty may be a pattern of unpredictable flares rather than constant symptoms. A useful application explains that pattern and supports it with gastroenterology records, testing, treatment history and descriptions of what you can sustain between flares.

How SSA Evaluates This Condition

SSA listing 5.06 covers inflammatory bowel disease documented by endoscopy, biopsy, imaging or operative findings. It has different routes involving specified obstructions, combinations of clinical findings or repeated complications with marked functional limitations. A Crohn's diagnosis or frequent diarrhea alone does not establish the complete listing. The timing and details in the current rule matter. When a listing is not met or medically equaled, SSA still reviews work capacity, including the combined effects of bowel symptoms, other impairments and treatment.

Records That Can Clarify Your Claim

  • Gastroenterology notes and the reports that established the disease, including where inflammation occurs and any documented strictures, fistulas or abscesses.
  • Emergency, hospital and operative records with dates, reasons for care and recovery; relevant blood tests and nutrition-support records.
  • A practical symptom record describing bowel urgency, time away from tasks, flares and recovery, with the pattern discussed in clinical visits.

Explain the Effect on Daily Activities and Work

Explain bathroom needs in terms of frequency, urgency and time, without guessing that a particular number automatically qualifies. Include whether symptoms disrupt sleep and affect the following day. If abdominal pain or fatigue slows tasks, describe what happens and the help you need. Distinguish a planned appointment from an unpredictable absence. Improvement during a short remission should be reported alongside the wider pattern, not hidden or treated as proof that all limitations have ended.

Treatment and Its Effects

NIDDK describes medicines to reduce inflammation and maintain remission, as well as surgery for selected complications or symptoms that do not improve with medicines. Surgery does not cure Crohn's disease. Some people need nutritional support or hospital treatment. Record your actual medication and procedure history, the response and any adverse effects or complications. Treatment suitability depends on your medical situation; this guide does not recommend a particular drug, diet or operation. Include the time required for treatment and recovery when it affects your schedule.

If care is delayed or interrupted, document the reason, such as cost, lack of access, side effects or medical advice, and your efforts to obtain appropriate care. SSA has specific rules for prescribed treatment and good cause; a treatment gap should not be left unexplained.

Preparing an Application or Appeal

Identify every hospital and specialist who holds relevant records. Provide a timeline of flares, admissions, treatment changes and work adjustments. If you have an ostomy or have had a bowel resection, explain the remaining functional effects rather than assuming the operation itself tells SSA everything. On appeal, use the denial's reasoning to identify missing evidence about the disease, the duration of limitations or your capacity for regular work.

This guide concerns adults. Disability generally must prevent substantial gainful activity for at least 12 consecutive months, be expected to do so, or be expected to result in death. SSDI also has insured-work requirements; SSI has financial and other eligibility rules. Childhood claims use a different medical framework.

What Approval Rates Can Tell You

The sources reviewed do not establish a current personal approval probability for Crohn's disease. Award totals for digestive disorders are not the proportion of Crohn's applicants approved. Historical allowance studies may use broader diagnostic categories and older treatment-era cohorts, so any percentage needs its full context.

See Disability Approval Rates: Years, Diagnoses and Limits for dated SSA figures and an explanation of their denominators.

Can Crohn's Qualify When I Do Not Meet Listing 5.06?

A listing is one route. SSA can continue to assess what you can do despite your impairments and whether work is possible under its rules. Document the actual pattern of symptoms and interruptions rather than assuming a listing mismatch ends the evaluation.
