Chronic hepatitis means ongoing liver inflammation, but its cause and consequences vary. A positive viral test, treatment prescription or abnormal liver enzyme does not tell SSA everything about your ability to work. A useful application distinguishes the underlying disease from liver damage, treatment effects and remaining functional limitations.

Identify the Type of Hepatitis

Hepatitis B and C are viral infections. Autoimmune hepatitis involves the immune system attacking the liver. These conditions do not use the same treatment, and not every person with chronic hepatitis has cirrhosis or the same symptoms. Tell SSA the exact diagnosis and the clinicians who established it.

NIDDK describes blood testing for viral infection and assessment of liver damage through laboratory findings, imaging, elastography or biopsy when appropriate. Include the actual reports and clinical interpretation. A hepatitis C antibody result and evidence of current virus answer different questions, so do not summarize all testing simply as positive hepatitis.

SSA Evaluates Severity and Remaining Capacity

SSA listing 5.05 addresses chronic liver disease through detailed alternatives involving specified complications or repeated SSA chronic-liver-disease scores. A diagnosis of hepatitis or an elevated liver enzyme alone does not satisfy those requirements. The clinical duration used to describe chronic hepatitis is also not a substitute for the disability duration rule.

If the impairment does not meet or medically equal a listing, SSA considers residual functional capacity and whether you can do past relevant work or other work. Include all established impairments and their combined effects. Adult disability-based SSDI and SSI require inability to perform substantial gainful activity lasting or expected to last at least 12 continuous months, or expected to result in death. SSDI has insured-work requirements; SSI has financial and other nonmedical rules.

Organize Evidence Before and After Treatment

  • Identify the hepatitis type, diagnostic testing and specialist’s assessment of liver injury.
  • Provide laboratory trends, imaging and available pathology rather than a single isolated result.
  • Include treatment start and end dates, response and reasons for changes.
  • Document admissions or complications and follow-up after treatment, remission or viral clearance.

If there is established cirrhosis, include the records of its actual manifestations. If there is no advanced liver damage, do not imply that it exists to make the claim fit a listing. SSA can evaluate supported symptoms and limitations through the broader process.

Treatment Depends on the Cause

NIDDK describes antiviral treatment for hepatitis B when indicated; not everyone with chronic hepatitis B needs medication at every stage. Hepatitis C is treated with antiviral medicines that can cure the infection. Autoimmune hepatitis may require medicines that reduce immune activity, with monitoring for response and adverse effects. These are different clinical situations, not one standard course of therapy.

Record the effects you actually experience. If a medication causes fatigue, nausea or another problem, explain its frequency and impact and discuss it with the prescriber. If treatment improves laboratory results, document that improvement alongside any residual symptoms or existing damage. Do not stop medicines or delay care for a benefits application.

Explain cost, insurance or access barriers and efforts to obtain treatment. SSA’s separate failure-to-follow-treatment policy applies only under specified prerequisites and considers whether prescribed treatment would restore substantial gainful activity and whether there is good cause. The absence of medication does not, by itself, show that a person ignored medical advice.

Describe the Impact on a Workday

Explain fatigue, poor appetite, discomfort or cognitive symptoms when present, including the pace, breaks and assistance needed. Distinguish a treatment appointment from an unpredictable episode. If a symptom has another possible cause, provide the relevant evaluation rather than assigning it to hepatitis on your own.

Does Clearing Hepatitis C Automatically End the Issue?

Viral clearance is important, but SSA still needs the relevant period and any remaining impairment. Existing liver damage and other established conditions may require evaluation. Conversely, the earlier diagnosis does not prove continuing work limits if treatment resolved them. Current follow-up is essential.

Applications and Approval Information

After a denial, check whether the decision correctly identifies the hepatitis type, liver findings and post-treatment functioning. The reviewed sources do not establish a current personal approval probability. Viral cure rates and broad liver-disease allowance figures are different measures; see the approval-data guide.
