2027 Social Security COLA: What Disability Recipients Should Know
On This Page
SSA announced on October 14, 2026 that Social Security benefits and SSI payments will receive a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment for 2027. This is an announced annual adjustment, not a special payment that requires applying through a third-party website.
When the Increase Begins
SSA says the increase starts with Social Security benefits payable in January 2027. Increased SSI payments begin December 31, 2026. An early SSI payment reflects the payment calendar; it should not be described as an extra month of benefits.
Published Figures for 2027
- SSI federal payment standard: $1,029 a month for an individual and $1,544 for an eligible couple.
- Substantial gainful activity: $1,770 a month for non-blind individuals and $2,950 for blind individuals under the applicable disability rules.
- Trial work period: $1,270 monthly earnings threshold.
- SSI resource limits: $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple.
Each figure serves a different purpose. SSI payment amounts depend on the person’s circumstances, and SSDI work incentives are not interchangeable with SSI income rules. The new work thresholds are 2027 figures; use the applicable year when reporting work.
Check Your Personal Notice
Your net deposit can differ from the gross benefit because of deductions or other adjustments. SSA’s announcement says people who sign up for digital notices by November 18, 2026 can access their personal COLA notice online earlier than by mail. Use the official account service to check your amount.
Keep this announcement separate from general retirement averages: an average increase for retirees is not a promised dollar increase for every disability recipient.
