An SSDI application connects your work record, medical history, and description of your limitations. Preparing those parts makes the information easier to follow, but no filing method or checklist guarantees approval. Use SSA’s official application route and keep a record of what you submit.

Check What You Are Applying For

For SSDI on your own earnings record, SSA considers whether you have enough covered work and meet its medical definition of disability. The condition generally must prevent substantial gainful activity and last or be expected to last at least 12 consecutive months or result in death. You do not have to wait until a year has passed if the duration requirement is expected to be met.

SSDI does not require having no other income. Private disability payments and pensions generally do not reduce SSDI, while some public disability payments can. SSI has separate financial eligibility rules. Identify the program instead of using one set of financial assumptions for both.

Build a Short Information List

SSA’s disability booklet identifies information that helps the agency evaluate a claim. Prepare:

  • Names and contact details for treating providers, with dates of visits.
  • Medicines and dosages, and test results or medical records you already have.
  • A summary of your jobs and the work you performed.
  • Your recent W-2 or relevant self-employment tax return.

Keep a separate list of records you requested but have not received. Do not delay applying solely because gathering every item is difficult; SSA says it can help obtain information.

Use the Official Filing Options

SSA provides an online disability application route and telephone or in-person application appointments. Follow the current directions on its disability page. The application may be accompanied by an Adult Disability Report, which describes your condition and work, and an authorization allowing medical information to be released.

Before submitting, reread dates and contact details. Describe your own experience without copying stock statements about what a successful claimant supposedly says. If someone helps you, review the answers together so they accurately represent your circumstances.

Explain the Work You Actually Did

Job titles can hide important differences. Describe lifting, walking, sitting, equipment, instructions, supervision, and other physical or mental demands. SSA’s current past-work rules generally use a five-year relevant period, subject to the applicable ending date and other requirements. Follow the form and SSA’s instructions rather than an outdated request for a routine 15-year history.

Keep the File Moving After Submission

Save confirmation of filing. Keep notices in one place, track requested information, and report changes as instructed. A request for an examination or additional records is part of developing the evidence, not a promise of approval or a prediction of denial.

When the decision arrives, check the reason and any appeal instructions. If benefits are approved, review the amount and effective date instead of assuming a diagnosis determines the payment size.
