Adrenal insufficiency involves inadequate production of essential hormones. Some people function well with treatment; others have persistent limitations, serious episodes or additional medical conditions. An application should show your individual course, including treatment response and functioning between episodes.

Addison’s Disease Is One Type

NIDDK distinguishes primary adrenal insufficiency, often called Addison’s disease, from secondary and tertiary forms involving hormone signals from the pituitary or hypothalamus. The distinction can affect testing and treatment. Records should name the condition actually diagnosed rather than use a general label such as adrenal fatigue.

Relevant evidence can include the endocrinologist’s assessment, hormone testing and investigations of the underlying cause. A single laboratory value without timing or clinical interpretation may not explain the diagnosis. Provide existing reports; decisions about stimulation tests or other investigations belong with the treating clinician.

How SSA Evaluates Endocrine Impairments

SSA section 9.00 evaluates the effects of endocrine disorders under the affected body systems. Its adrenal guidance gives examples involving bone, cardiovascular, digestive and mental effects. It does not establish automatic eligibility from the diagnosis of Addison’s disease or from taking replacement hormones.

If no listing is met or medically equaled, SSA assesses residual functional capacity and considers past relevant work and other work, including vocational factors. The review includes all established impairments and symptoms supported by the record.

Adult disability-based SSDI and SSI require an impairment preventing substantial gainful activity that lasts or is expected to last at least 12 continuous months, or is expected to result in death. A lifelong need for medication does not necessarily mean lifelong inability to work. SSDI also has work-insurance rules; SSI has financial and other nonmedical requirements.

Document Episodes and the Time Between Them

  • Identify the diagnosis, available hormone tests and the clinician’s interpretation.
  • Include emergency and hospital records documenting suspected or confirmed crises, treatment and recovery.
  • Provide the prescribed replacement plan and follow-up showing adjustments and response.
  • Describe remaining symptoms and other established conditions that contribute to limitations.

Adrenal crisis can be life-threatening and requires emergency medical care. This benefits guide is not an emergency or dosing plan. Follow the instructions your medical team has given for illness and emergencies; do not wait for a claims appointment when urgent care is needed.

Treatment and Its Practical Demands

NIDDK describes hormone replacement tailored to the hormones the body lacks. The clinical plan may need adjustment for illness, injury or surgery. Not every form of adrenal insufficiency requires the same medicines. This page does not tell you to change a dose or stop a steroid.

For SSA, record what was prescribed, why it changed and whether symptoms improved. Include adverse effects you experience and the clinician’s response. Explain actual monitoring, treatment interruptions or recovery time rather than assuming a prescription schedule alone prevents employment.

If medication cost, coverage, transportation or another barrier caused a gap, document the circumstances and attempts to obtain care. SSA’s failure-to-follow-treatment analysis applies only under defined prerequisites, including an otherwise qualifying claim and relevant prescribed treatment. It considers expected restoration of substantial gainful activity and good cause; a missed appointment is not the whole test.

Connect Symptoms to Specific Tasks

Describe weakness, fatigue, dizziness or thinking problems that actually occur and their effects on standing, walking, carrying, concentration or pace. Give the frequency and duration of episodes and how long you need to recover. Include better periods and improvements rather than describing every day as a crisis.

If you tried to continue working, explain reduced hours, changes in duties, extra help or interruptions. A clinician’s explanation of restrictions and their medical basis can clarify the record without promising that SSA will adopt a particular conclusion.

Does Carrying an Emergency Injection Establish Disability?

No. It is part of a medical safety plan, not a direct measure of sustained work capacity. SSA needs the actual impairment, episodes, limitations and applicable eligibility requirements.

Applications and Approval Data

After a denial, identify whether the missing evidence concerns the diagnosis, episode history, duration or ongoing functioning. The reviewed sources do not establish a personal adrenal-insufficiency approval rate. Disease prevalence or crisis risk is not a benefit allowance probability; read the approval-data guide.
