Ataxia describes impaired coordination; it can arise from different disorders. A useful claim connects the clinician’s explanation of the cause with balance, hand use, speech and other effects that actually occur. The label alone does not show whether the problem is temporary, progressive or responsive to treatment.

The Cause and Functional Findings Both Matter

SSA’s neurological evaluation can address coordination problems, but there is no single adult listing named ataxia that covers every cause. An underlying disorder may have a relevant listing. If the findings do not meet or medically equal a listing, SSA assesses remaining work capacity and the combined effects of documented impairments.

Explain movement control separately from muscle strength. A person may be able to lift an object yet have trouble placing it accurately, or have adequate strength but need assistance with balance. The evidence should describe the actual limitation, not infer it from a diagnostic name.

Gather the Existing Evaluation

  • Identify neurological examination findings and the clinician’s working diagnosis, including uncertainty about the cause.
  • Provide information about imaging, blood tests, genetic testing or other investigations already performed when relevant.
  • Include therapy assessments of balance, coordination, speech or daily activities.
  • Describe falls or near-falls accurately, devices used and help required; do not test unsafe movements to create evidence.

A short account of an ordinary task can help: what you attempted, the support used, time needed and whether you could repeat it. Include periods when the task went well. Observations supplement the medical evidence rather than replacing a diagnostic evaluation.

Treatment Depends on Why Ataxia Occurs

Clinical evaluation may identify a treatable cause, while other forms require symptom management and support. Approaches can include treatment of the underlying disorder, medicines for selected symptoms, assistive devices and physical, occupational or speech therapy. The clinical team should decide what is suitable; this page supplies no exercise or medication instructions.

Keep a record of recommendations, care actually received, improvement and remaining difficulty. Explain any treatment side effects and practical barriers to obtaining therapy or equipment. A recommendation that has not yet been delivered is different from a support already available every day.

A gap in care needs an explanation, including cost, unavailable appointments or adverse effects. SSA’s failure-to-follow-prescribed-treatment rule applies only in defined circumstances: the person would otherwise qualify, their own medical source prescribed treatment, and they did not follow it. SSA then considers whether it would restore the ability to perform substantial gainful activity and whether there was good cause. A missed visit alone does not answer those questions.

Explain Reliable Performance

Work evidence may involve moving around obstacles, handling small items, reaching accurately or communicating clearly. Identify the relevant demands of your own jobs rather than listing every possible symptom. If a seated task is easier, explain whether coordination, pace or speech still creates a problem. Do not assume that balance difficulty alone rules out all seated work.

For an unfavorable decision, check whether the file contained the cause-specific evaluation and current therapy findings. Follow the notice’s appeal instructions and identify missing or misunderstood evidence.

What if the Cause of Ataxia Is Still Being Investigated?

Describe that uncertainty honestly and identify the clinicians and tests involved. Provide the medical findings and actual limitations already documented. Do not select a hereditary or degenerative diagnosis yourself simply because it appears in a listing.

Applications and Approval Data

This guide concerns adult claims. SSA generally requires a medically established impairment that prevents substantial gainful activity for at least 12 continuous months, is expected to do so, or is expected to result in death. SSDI also has insured-work requirements; SSI has financial and other eligibility rules. Childhood disability rules differ.

Ataxia is a sign shared by different disorders, not a uniform approval category. Statistics for one underlying disease cannot be assigned to everyone with coordination problems. See how disability approval statistics are defined.

Use our application guide and medical and work records checklist. If denied, read the notice and its review instructions promptly; our appeals guide explains the process.
